Contrary to earlier models, modern Saab cars use a transponder in the key-fob, instead of a physical key to unlock and start the vehicle. The good thing is that the battery can be replaced quite easily by an experienced locksmith. If you have the proper tools and patience, you can do it yourself. The first step is separating the key-fob. Insert a flathead into the slot in the middle of your case. It is important to work slowly, as the plastic is extremely thin and is susceptible to damage.

After the case is opened, you can create the new key by combining lower portion of the old key along with the transponder and banana. This will ensure that the new key is linked to the CIM properly, which can make a huge difference when replacing the original key for your Saab 9-3.
